The National Standards for Healthcare Food and Drink… one year on
On Wednesday 6th December we held an ‘in conversation with’ webinar addressing the national standards, a year on since their publication. With Phil Shelley, Chair of the NHS Food Review, and Tim Radcliffe, Net Zero Food Programme Manager, four of the standards were explored:
- Food safety
- 24/7 Provision
- Leadership
- Waste
Practical examples of how the standards have been implemented by providers, as well as the initiatives and solutions introduced were also discussed. Although ownership and accountability are important when tackling the standards, Phil highlights how integration with existing services is crucial – recognising the current pressures teams are facing on the ground. Discovering how teams are doing, what NHS England can do to support, and establishing methodical ways to move forward are priorities for next year.

Phil was Chair of the NHS Review of Hospital Food. At NHSE he covers several Soft FM areas, including leadership of the Food Review recommendations, cleanliness and linen management.
Having served as National Chair of the Hospital Catering Association, he proactively drives collaboration, to strengthen a holistic approach to catering. He received the Public Sector Catering Award in 2018 and the HCA Outstanding Service Award in 2020.Tim Radcliffe

Tim joined NHSE as Net Zero Food Programme Manager in August 2022 promoting the Net Zero Food Programme, an integral part of the Food Standards and NHS Food Review. Tim has over thirty years hospitality and restaurant ownership experience and is a passionate proponent of food as medicine, appearing on Channel Four’s Food Unwrapped. Winner of the Public Sector Hospital Caterer of the year 2021 & Hospital Caterer of the year 2022.
